| If you haven't been keeping up, then this new video from Double Fine is a pretty neat introduction to the characters and general wispy aesthetic of its famed crowdfunded adventure, Broken Age, and it also serves as a showing-off of the vocal talent. I kind of thought that DF's use of the term "friend" was reserved solely for those who put money into the Kickstarter campaign, but I guess I'd also change my definition of it on the fly if it meant I got to hang out with Jack Black. "I feel like I should do something dramatic," says Black, awkwardly and wonderfully. He's right! Just look at all the other actors sitting in the Double Fine recording booth like it's no big deal. Richard Steven Horvitz, who played Raz in Psychonauts, makes a grand return as what appears to be a giant talking cat toy, as does Jennifer Hale, who previously starred in Brutal Legend (though you probably know her better as Mass Effect's female Shepard). And though this video reveals what is probably the best-acted spoon we've ever seen, the most special thing about it, of course, are further glimpses of adventure gaming's revival. While this video plays more like a voiced concept art gallery than any meaningful gameplay footage, there are a hell of a lot more characters than I'd initially anticipated. Combined with news that the studio's already considering new sources of money to further fund development, it seems like Broken Age has a mighty good shot at competing with current blockbuster games, at least in terms of scope. Watch Dogs footage shows open world events, multiplayer invasions g21
| Ubisoft have released a 14 minute "vertical slice" of "completely systemic" Watch Dogs footage. Translation: Ubisoft have released a big chunk o' video, showing off the open world shenanigans of Watch Dogs. Example: being a homicidal cyber-jerk, being a nosy cyber-stalker, or being a creepy cyber-thief. Basically, a lot of what you do isn't very nice, but it is wi-fi enabled. I'm not 100% on Ubi's definition of morality choices that offer "shades of grey". Stealing a mother's bank details with the intention of robbing her is, I think, inarguably dickish. Still, stick with the adventures of Aiden Pierce, Supergit, for some exciting looking asymmetrical multiplayer back-and-forth hacking. Watch Dogs is due out November 22nd. XCOM: Enemy Within footage shows mechanical punching and super-legs g21
| Genetically altering humans has been proven (through speculative fiction) a universally bad idea. Sure, super-powered leg muscles sound like fun, but sooner or later the owner of those muscles is going to go mad with power. Before you know it, they're leaping through space as part of a plan to punch the moon out of orbit. Still, in the world of XCOM: Enemy Within, aliens are attacking the planet. In light of that, the powers and abilities shown off in this game footage are probably for the best. You can find the full list of planned features for the massive Enemy Unknown expansion through our announcement post. XCOM: Enemy Within is due out November 12th. Total War: Rome 2 to get first patch this Friday, weekly fixes for immediate future g21
|
Creative Assembly have announced the update and support strategy for their latest Total War, and, like the city it's based on, revealed that Rome II won't be patched in a day. The developers plan to release fixes for the game "on a weekly basis in the immediate future", targeting their updates based on player feedback, as they configure and tune the release post-launch. "As with all large PC releases, the variety of hardware and general system specifications can cause issues for some people and we are urgently working to help get them the right experience," they say. "As announced last month, we are also planning to tweak the balancing, AI routines and other features now that we're getting real-time metric feedback from thousands of players." "The result is that the first update to the game will drop this Friday, with the intention to update the game on a weekly basis in the immediate future." The full patch notes will be released on Friday, but CA say that it will target "known instances of crashes due to hardware conflicts alongside several other performance fixes." In the meantime, they point people to the game's support forums, where a number of fixes and workarounds have been suggested for those experiencing graphics issues. Our review found a great game, marred slightly by AI bugs. As such, it's good to see a stated commitment to fixing the issues that players are having. Guild Wars 2′s Tequatl Rising update will improve a dragon, add a looking for group tool g21
|
Dragons! Guild Wars 2 may have just re-opened its Super Adventure Box, but that hasn't stopped ArenaNet from giving fans at PAX an early preview of the next update. Tequatl Rising will overhaul the open-world boss battle against the titular plague beast, adding new phases and attack patterns for a more challenging encounter. ANet also revealed that the update, due September 17th, will finally add a much anticipated looking for group tool. Why update one of the game's boss encounters? Because currently, you and your fellow players can defeat Tequatl using the following tactics:
This, at least, is marginally better than The Shatterer dragon, who skips the middle step. The new Tequatl will be able to summon a protective Bone Wall, which will render him invulnerable, along with a knockback-inducing tidal wave and other crowd control effects. He'll also trigger an "event phase" throughout the battle, requiring players to defend the batteries of the "mega-cannon". In all, it sounds like a more involved variation of the Claw of Jormag battle – Guild Wars 2′s third, and most interesting, dragon encounter. As for the LfG tool, it's largely what people hoped for. Players will be able to find groups for dungeons, fractals, open world bits, living world dungeons, personal story quests, PvP, and WvW. The tool will work cross-server, but be region specific. You'll also be able to merge groups – meaning two small existing bands can be squashed together into a single dungeon smashing machine. Tequatl Rising is due out September 17th.
