Guild Wars 2′s Tequatl Rising update will improve a dragon, add a looking for group tool g21

Dragons! Guild Wars 2 may have just re-opened its Super Adventure Box, but that hasn't stopped ArenaNet from giving fans at PAX an early preview of the next update. Tequatl Rising will overhaul the open-world boss battle against the titular plague beast, adding new phases and attack patterns for a more challenging encounter. ANet also revealed that the update, due September 17th, will finally add a much anticipated looking for group tool.

Why update one of the game's boss encounters? Because currently, you and your fellow players can defeat Tequatl using the following tactics:

  1. Stand off to the side, hitting the thing.
  2. Occasionally move left or right to dodge an attack and/or walking pus balloon.
  3. Win.

This, at least, is marginally better than The Shatterer dragon, who skips the middle step.

The new Tequatl will be able to summon a protective Bone Wall, which will render him invulnerable, along with a knockback-inducing tidal wave and other crowd control effects. He'll also trigger an "event phase" throughout the battle, requiring players to defend the batteries of the "mega-cannon". In all, it sounds like a more involved variation of the Claw of Jormag battle – Guild Wars 2′s third, and most interesting, dragon encounter.

As for the LfG tool, it's largely what people hoped for. Players will be able to find groups for dungeons, fractals, open world bits, living world dungeons, personal story quests, PvP, and WvW. The tool will work cross-server, but be region specific. You'll also be able to merge groups – meaning two small existing bands can be squashed together into a single dungeon smashing machine.

Tequatl Rising is due out September 17th.

Sunless Sea sails out to Kickstarter in search of rescue g21

The sea is a terrible place. It's deadly, angry, and is basically filled with aliens. Why you'd want to go there is an absolutely mystery. At least space is only passively trying to kill you. Its many collected horrors do make it a suitably atmospheric setting for a game, though. Sunless Sea takes the briny jerk, and uses it as the basis for exploratory adventure and survival. It's being made by the team behind Fallen London, and is now on Kickstarter looking for backers.

The team cite roguelikes like FTL, and exploration sandboxes like Elite as influences. Judging from the choosable story elements, I'd say comparisons to Zafehouse Diaries wouldn't be too wide of the mark, either, although the top-down means the player is in direct control of their vessel. Survival will be a major focus, with supplies and fuel both in need of replenishing.

"Once you get beyond the trade lanes, the Sunless Sea is unexplored, and the map will change every time you play," the team write, explaining the procedural generation. "One time you might encounter a corsair's village in a forest of stalagmites, another you might come face to face with the vicious war trimarans of the New Khanate or the golden agents of the Dawn Machine."

Failbetter are looking for £60,000 to fund the game, and already they've raised over £20,000, despite only having been live for just over a day. Stretch goals, naturally, have also been planned.

Should it be funded, Sunless Sea is planned for May 2014.

Battlefield 4 will include a practice range for learning to fly helicopters and jets g21

Not to brag, but I'm really good with jets and helicopters in Battlefield 3. By which I mean: I'm terrible at flying them, so I don't bother trying. I could attempt to learn, but that would mean taking a valuable asset from my team, and then crashing that asset into a lake, or windmill, or enemy rocket. That's why it's nice to hear that, for Battlefield 4, DICE are planning to include a "test range" to make such airborne humiliation less public.

"We've definitely heard that people are afraid of getting in there [and using vehicles like helicopters] and that's not our intent," says DICE creative director Lars Gustavsson in an interview with IGN, "so what we've done is, we've added a test range, which allows you to try out all the hardware ahead of time."

"If you want to learn to fly a helicopter," he continues, "you can get in there and you can find the settings that work best for you. And then start doing some stunt flights just to feel safe before you go out and get the responsibility of a bunch of other people sitting in your helicopter. So I truly hope that this will help people feel more safe about trying out the whole battlefield."

It's a great (and some would say staggeringly obvious) idea. Now you can practice away to your hearts content, build up the needed confidence to show off you skills, then choke under pressure, clip the tail of your helicopter on a building, and kill your entire squad. Or, if you're not a nervous multiplayer pessimist, you could help win a key location that's integral to your ultimate victory.

Check out the full IGN interview for more design decisions, and Gustavsson's admission that a dinosaur mode "sounds extremely sexy".

Thanks, CVG.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 heads east for its first DLC expansion g21

News of a Euro Truck Simulator 2 expansion shipped out a few weeks ago. It took a while to get here, though: arriving on the back of a lorry pocked with dents, it's many fines and tickets flapping about the windscreen. Having played the game, I sympathise. Now that it's here we can delve into info about the game's first DLC, Going East, which adds a number of Eastern European cities to the game.

That means one thing: tanks!

Not playable tanks, of course. Fun fact: tanks are not trucks.

The DLC promises thirteen additional cities, including Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. It's a big increase to the available land mass, even if it would be nice to see some other parts of the game, such as available cargo types, get a boost too.

SCS do suggest that more DLC is planned for the future. "Once this is all done," they write, "the DLC team will be facing the big question – what next? Another territory expansion?" The smiley face afterwards would suggest that yes, that is a safe bet.

The developers previously announced that they're planning to patch Oculus Rift support into the game. Personally, I'm hoping for Razer Hydra support too. Then we'd really get to live a true simulation of the trick driving lifestyle:

Accurate road-rage modelling? Well, I can dream.

Going East will be released on 20th September. If you're not sure why I've dedicated hundreds of words and a silly photoshop to a game about driving on motorways, you should really check out our review.

Vlambeer celebrates birthday with free release of Wasteland Kings prototype and Gun Godz g21

Wasteland Kings

Two-person Dutch development team Vlambeer has released a pair of its games for free to celebrate the studio's third birthday. The two games include a prototype version of Wasteland Kings, the team's current project, and Gun Godz, a roguelike shooter tipping the corner of its pixelated hat in the direction of the original Wolfenstein.

Vlambeer had originally created Wasteland Kings as part of a charitable Mojam gamejam that took place back in February, but has since expanded the scope of the game. Also a roguelike game, Wasteland Kings deals with post-apocalyptic mutants and their everyday problems.

"The radioactive waste in the world allows mutants to get ahead by mutating new limbs on the fly and the abundant availability of powerful weaponry makes the quest to become Wasteland King one fraught with peril," according to the game's official website.

An FPS inspired by gangster-rap, Gun Godz looks like it shares a healthy amount of its DNA with classic shooters like Wolfenstein and Doom. Players work to escape the jail of a hotel, which also happens to be the only building on the planet Venus where the game takes place. Appropriately enough the hotel owner, also known as the God of Guns, owns his own record label. The game features 12 levels, some secret areas, and a structure that should make speedrunning a possible playstyle.

Both games, along with some other goodies from the studio that brought you Super Crate Box, are available to download here. Thanks, Indie Games. Image of Gun Godz below via venuspatrol.com
