New indie puzzler Sokobond could be your next chemistry teacher g21

What's the difference between water and cyanide, anyway? Chemistry explains how the bits and pieces that make up the universe hold themselves together and Sokobond, a new indie puzzle game from developers Alan Hazelden and Harry Lee, wants to help you understand how all those elements, compounds, and molecules actually function.

Inspired in part by a type of classic Japanese transport puzzler, Sokobond has been designed to reveal its properties as you play, according to the developers' description.

"Part of Sokobond's charm is in the joy of discovery," report the developers on their website. "We are both very passionate about minimalist puzzle design. Check out Impasse and These Robotic Hearts of Mine. Now imagine the developers of these two games came together in a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco and started making a game about chemistry. This is that game."

The game includes music by Ryan Roth, whose previous work includes projects like Starseed Pilgrim and Electronic Super Joy. Sokobond made a list of 10 outstanding indie games at the recent PAX Prime convention in Seattle.

Sokobond is available for $10 through the developers' website, but is also looking for up-votes through the Steam Greenlight program. Check out its launch trailer below.

Crypt of the NecroDancer continues to pump out the jams in a new trailer g21

We've been keeping a weather eye on the excellently titled Crypt of the NecroDancer around here, so we're very pleased to see that a new cinematic trailer landed for the "hardcore rhythm-based roguelike" last week. Crypt of the NecroDancer follows the story of an unnamed hero who is fighting back against The Man for telling her she's "too young." Too young to what? I'm not sure, but it looks like they were telling her not to go graverobbing, which is actually pretty solid advice.

After falling into a crypt, the NecroDancer busts out his mad beats, steals her still-beating heart and takes off. Fighting across disco-floor dungeons, the hero takes a dive through what looks like Dungeons of Dredmore crossed with Dance Dance Revolution. My favorite detail? The skeletons are jamming as they come toward you to tear apart your tender mortal flesh.

The new trailer lacks the sick bass line of the previous trailer, but it shows off more of the groovy-enough-to-make-games-journalists-dance music and dungeon diving. Upgradable skills and loot make an appearance, and word is you can use your own MP3s to drive the soundtrack.

Crypt of the NecroDancer will hit early access release late this year for a mere $14.99. Keep an eye on its website for updates.

XCOM: Enemy Within mod tools aren’t “on the table,” but might be coming someday g21

XCOM: Enemy Unknown was one of our favorite games last year, but the brilliant turn-based strategy game lacks the modding support we hope for in big PC games. In a new interview, XCOM designer Garth DeAngelis says that modding tools aren't "on the table currently," but that doesn't mean they're never coming.

"Technically, sure, there's a lot of support for [Unreal Development Kit] and modding and things like that," DeAngelis told PCGamesN. "And, if we were to do it, we'd want to do it right. We'd provide the proper level of tools and support and that takes a little more planning and time to get that right and we're not on that right now."

There are some mods available for Enemy Unknown at the XCOM Mod Nexus, yes. But without dedicated dev tools and an established community, the mod nexus offering will never be as robust as, say, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim's 581 pages of Steam Workshop mods.

Altering game data will be a bit easier in Enemy Unknown's expansion pack, XCOM: Enemy Within, though. XCOM senior designer Anand Gupta told PCGamesN that in Enemy Within, "[a]ll the stuff you'd expect to be in the easily accessible data, the .ini files, is. Like the 'How much does a mech cost?' stuff is relatively easy for players to touch… We also did make an effort to move more core game data into those things, things that we didn't have to. It doesn't rise to the level of tool support or editor support. But we did make it more accessible for people who wanted to tweak those files."

Enemy Within comes out on November 15, and I'm looking forward to seeing what devoted fans some up with. Until dedicated modding tools arrive someday, it's the best we're going to get.

Thanks, PCGamesN.

Football Manager 2014 videos show off new menus and interface g21

I'm putting my trust in the fact that these two new video blogs for the upcoming Football Manager 2014 are informative and useful. I did try to watch them, but was overwhelmed by the incomprehensible stats and jargon. I'd have an easier time bringing the nations of the world under the flag of some military empire, than I would trying to assault Wigan Athletic with a handful of costly footbalteers. If your preference is for conquering terraces, Sports Interactive have explained their new game's improved UI and News systems.

You can learn more about Football Manager 2014 through our interview with Sports Interactive boss Miles Jacobson. The game is due out later this year.

Thanks, RPS (via Strategy Informer)
