While we certainly saw a whole lot of online spell casting and ogre-clobbering in The Elder Scrolls Online at E3, there was a noticeable absence at the event. Deathclaws didn't roam the show floor like they normally do. The food trucks weren't serving the decadent squirrel on a stick, and Fallout 4 was nowhere to be seen. Bethesda VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines explained to Polygon that it was too early to unveil Todd Howard's latest project at E3, calling the idea "unrealistic" "I mean [fans] have been clamoring for a Fallout game for a long time now. What people need to understand—whether it is Bethesda Game Studios, Arkane or anybody—expecting information like that in any short period of time after they moved off one project to the other is really unrealistic," Hines said. It's a little strange to say it's unrealistic to expect upcoming announcements when Bethesda said to expect new stuff a few months ago—was that only referring to The Evil Within? I'm sure Todd Howard and his team are working on something big, but I'm not sure I'd call a year and seven months (the time since Skyrim released) a "short period of time." But fair enough—game development is a slow process, and Hines wants to make it clear that Bethesda gives its studios ample time to show off their games, saying, "Todd will let me know when he is ready, and I will tell everyone else what he is up to."
